5 to try: Butchers

With the weather warming up (and the prospect of having to wear bathers drawing nearer) I’m beginning to cut back on the roasted veg and slow cooked comfort foods and start on the salads and BBQ. And stuff buying meat from Coles & Woolies, here are five fabulous local butcher’s to support instead – shop local!

Paddock + Farm

1088 Beaufort Street, Bedford
Open Monday to Friday 7:30am to 6pm and Saturday 7:30am to 5pm
Closed on Sunday

An old fashioned butchery (with an in store cafe so you can try before you buy!) that also sells oven to table ready meals, wholefoods, gourmet items, bulk spices, bread and coffee. It’s meat is typically organic and preservative free and it’s paleo and GAPS friendly.

Hampshire on Eighth

88 Eight Ave, Maylands
Open 8am to 6pm Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm on Saturday and 8am to 4pm on Sunday.

A boutique butchers where the emphasis is on locally sourced grass fed lamb and beef and free range pork & chicken. Brilliant range of gluten free schnitzels and kievs (my personal fave).

Mondo Butchers

824 Beaufort St, Inglewood
Open Tuesday to Thursday 8am to 6pm and Saturday 7am to 2pm.
Closed Mondays

You can’t do a blog on local butchers and leave out Mondo. Vince and his retail shop in Inglewood  (where he moved to from Midland many years ago) are a local and Perth institution. In addition to all your normal meats they do a great range in game, speciality foods and oven to table ready meals. Visit on a Saturday for their mini market and fresh hot roast beef rolls.

Frank Torre Quality Butchers

318-322 Bulwer Street, Perth
Open 8am to 5:30pm Monday to Friday and 8am to 1pm on Saturday.
Closed Sundays

If you want to know where inner city living Nonna’s buy their meat, it’s here. When I used to live around the corner I’d be there there multiple times each week too. Great selection of quality meats and always friendly service.

Princi Butchers

527 Fitzgerald Street, North Perth
Call (08) 9242 5442 for hours

With their own farm in Gingin to supply them everything sold here is organic, free range and hormone free. Operating for 45 years, this is another local institution.

And that’s a wrap for this week. If you’ve got any comments or ideas for other 5 to try’s let us know – we’d love to hear from you!
